New Ways of Thinking about Citizenship Education
Teaching has always been, to a greater or lesser extent, a way of building bridges between the past, the present and the future. This challenge requires a critical reading by teachers of the conditions under which their duties are performed and the influence of their actions. In a world experiencing powerful transformations, the intent of teaching citizens, which was at the root of national education systems, is under strain and being contested. What does it mean today to teach citizens? How do we prepare students to take part in the society, politics and cultural relationships of a future we know very little about? Teaching citizens and citizenship education can be a significant contribution made by schools to build a fairer and more inclusive world. Isabelino Siede, International Educator and Professor, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos AiresIsabelino Siede is a Bachelor in Education Sciences (UBA) and Professor at Primary School level. At present he is a candidate to the doctorate in the Facultad de Filosofçía y Letras (UBA). He was coordinator of Ethical and Civic Training and Civic Education in the programmes and curricular design of the City of Buenos Aires. He is Professor at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata and the IES Juan B. Justo. He is in charge of training at the Training School – CePA and is advisor to private institutions.
